Branding.
What exactly is it?
I thought I had a sound grasp on the concept of what a brand was. However, after reading this sample chapter I came to realize that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. This reading boosted my clarity on the subject of what a Brand actually is.
This reading also brought to my attention the main ‘rules’ as such, that I need to follow in order to create a brand that will appeal to the public. In particular, it clarified that the brand, is not intended primarily for my enjoyment and is meant to focus on the people that the brand is supposed to be targeting. It is intended to appeal to them.
I think that this reading in particular is going to have a large impact on the ‘products’ that we produce this year in class. Also, on an individual level, I think this reading will be able to help to gauge better as to what I need to produce so that I can appeal to my intended audience.
EDIT
Interesting little question to consider:

Family Heraldic Crest
The Hunter Heraldic Crest is the representation of my family. This crest originates from Scotland. Hunters, as the name states, were hunters and gatherers. This can be interpreted through the dog situated upon the helmet. Dogs were used to track and hunt game and were a vital role in the Hunter life. Looking closer at the crest, you can see three horns. These types of horns were used to signal the start of a hunt, especially in group hunts. They were also used to startle game out into open areas. Much like my ancestors I do enjoy the thrill of the hunt. I feel that these aspects of my family crest do reflect back on my own personality quite well.
The yellow of the crest signifies generosity. This can be related back to the trade of hunting. Hunters were used to gather meat for both their families or for trade. The green coloring on the crest could suggest loyalty. Hunters were also considered great warriors and very loyal.
Note: Cursum Perficio means ‘I Accomplish The Race’.
Logos that I Like:
The Madman Logo
Okay, from the moment I saw this logo when I first started watching Anime I liked it. It’s very simple. Emotionally, it makes me laugh. The only reason I have an attachment to it is because of my love for Anime. When I see this logo I associate it with my favorite shows.
Talking aesthetically, the logo is well balanced with color and imagery. The circle encompasses the little mad man but doesn’t overwhelm it. I think that with this logo and logotype, the viewer would associate more with the logo because it is before the text. Moving on to the logotype, the font is clear. The letters have a slight tilt to them. I think it was in order to create a little more oddity within the logo as a whole.
Looking at the logotype a little closer, “Entertainment” seems to get a little lost. I find myself just looking to the logo and MadMan. I never really bothered to look at entertainment. This could be a problem for first time viewers.
The Firefox Logo
First of all, look at it. It’s cute. Who wouldn’t like the fire fox logo? I mean it looks like the fox is hugging the world and that’s just adorable! As for what it represents, I like that too. Often I prefer Fire Fox over Internet Explorer any day. The aspect that I most enjoy about this logo in particular is the fact that it doesn’t need a logotype to represent it.
The logo itself is powerful enough on its own to be able to convey the meaning behind it. It is also aesthetically pleasing. It uses a simple shape as the base. I like the fact that the fox surrounds the world. I can’t help but wonder if the designer of this particular logo was trying to project that they believe that Fire Fox is going to take over the World Wide Web. I dunno, seems like a funny little theory to me.
Anyways, I’m moving off track. Dear oh dear. The color scheme for this logo is well-balanced in the sense that the two main colors, being orange and blue, do not overpower one another. They complement each other. However, the blue does make way for the orange so that the Fox does remain the central focus of the image.

Logos with a Heraldic Crest Resemblance:
The Peugeot Logo:
The Peugeot Logo resembles a Heraldic Crest. The lion insignia used in this logo is often seen in the older crests. The reason that this logo has so much appeal for car owners is the fact that the Lion is a symbol of strength and leadership as well as power and elegence. A real predator.
In this respect, viewers will associate this majestic beast with the cars that are sold by Peugeot and this may influence them to buy cars from this particular car dealer.
Nui Maynooth Logo:
This isn't so much a logo as a school emblem. But I thought that it deserved a mention. The sheild design projects an idea of safety and security. Strength is protrayed by the castle walls in the lower red portion of the shield. The feather quill is representative of learning. and the blue is symbolic of sports.
The way this logo portrays the school makes the impression that the school is a safe haven for students, however it is not a place that will promote slacking off. It is about moving forward and learning. This would definately appeal to parents considering sending their children to this school.
NRL Logo:
Ah yes, the NRL Logo. Everybody loves good old football. I think that what makes this appeal to the viewers of this symbol is the fact that it is the shape of a shield.
As I mentioned early, shields protray a sense of strength and security. Also, I think that the thick lines used in this particular symbol portray the idea of strength. This may may the viewer believe that this league is one of the stronger football leagues.
The arrows used in the image protray a sense of movement, representing the ball speeding towards the goals as such. The reason that this logo would appeal to it's viewers is because it represents the Footy League so well, and makes them believe that it will be long standing, and full of movement.
